Ciao, cancer! After cancer – A creative concept to promote an open and active communication in breast cancer follow-up care.

For my Master Thesis in 2023 I have created a branding concept and design language for the website and brand "Ciao, Cancer".
This website can be used by affected people, especially those that have completed their treatment and are now faced with being on their own again.

Abstract:

After a successfully completed breast cancer treatment, the patient is greatly relieved. They can return to their previous daily routine and only have occasional follow-up appointments. What sounds ideal at first can quickly become a burden because it is often only during this follow-up period that those affected realize what they have been through.
Insecurities and fears arise, and some can develop a feeling of aloneness and isolation without the medical examinations and routines they got used to.

This master‘s thesis aims to use a creative concept to reduce concerns and promote the processing of the traumatic events. For this purpose, a digital collection is designed, which compiles experience reports and support group offers from former patients. The collection favors the exchange among cancer survivors.
The concept results in the development of the brand „Ciao, Cancer!“ and its associated website. The website lists all kinds of stressful issues and topics that occupy users in the follow-up care phase.

The topics were discussed with patients and psychooncologists, and the concept proposal was verified. Further expert discussions were also held with providers from the cancer industry to gain a feel for the feasibility and implementation of the project.

The outcome of the conversations was consistently positive. The idea was perceived as an essential contribution towards optimizing patient needs and improving open communication surrounding cancer.
The vision describes that every oncology facility will refer to „Ciao, Cancer!“ after completing therapy and that, in the long term, psychological coping with breast cancer will improve.
